World's largest plane successfully completes maiden flight

On Saturday, the world's largest airplane took flight for the first time.

The Stratolaunch, which has the world's longest wingspan though is not the biggest when it comes to nose-to-tail measurements, landed two hours after taking off from Mojave Air and Space Port in California.

Test pilot Evan Thomas flew the jet to speeds of about 173 mph, climbing as high as 15,000 feet before returning smoothly and safely back, after a almost two-and-a-half-hour flight.

What just happened? The Stratolaunch is a enormous aircraft created to carry rockets into the stratosphere and yesterday it completed its first flight.

Stratolaunch makes a low pass over the Mojave Air & Space Port on Saturday during its first flight.

Stratolaunch Chief Executive Officer Jean Floyd said it was a fantastic first flight. In addition to Allen's death, Stratolaunch eventually gave up building a series of rockets and spacecrafts with which it meant to play a significant role in the growing market for satellite launches and other space artifacts.

While Stratolaunch calls its aircraft the world's largest, other airplanes exceed it in length. Evan Thomas has also been senior test pilot for Calspan Corporation and has been a test pilot at Scaled Composites for over a year. The jet flew 2.5 hours, achieving a maximum speed of 189 mph (304 kph) and altitudes up to 17,000 feet (5,181 meters), the company said.

If all goes as planned, Stratolaunch said the plane is expected to launch its first satellite sometime next year.

The aircraft with a wing span of 117 meters weighs 220 tons, has two connected fuselages and 28 wheels, and is powered by six Boeing 747 engines.

"It's these possibilities that drove us to develop the world's largest plane, which acts as a launch pad in the sky, bypassing numerous hazards that cause ground-launch delays here on Earth". His specialties in test flight include aviation and test safety, aircraft stability and control testing and operational leadership of flight test teams. We got running down the runway, did our rotation and the airplane very nicely and smoothly rotated.

Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1975, announced in 2011 that he had formed the privately funded Stratolaunch.
