Mavs center Porzingis accused of rape in NY

Dallas Mavericks center Kristaps Porzingis has been accused of raping a New York neighbor on February 7, 2018, hours after suffering a serious knee injury while playing for the Knicks, the New York Post reported Saturday.

Law enforcement sources told The New York Post that the NYPD are investigating the sexual assault claim against Porzingis but could not confirm whether he had used the language reported.

"Another source added that, "The word 'rape" was never used, only 'extortion'".

While playing for the Knicks previous year, Porzingis suffered a major knee injury during a game at Madison Square Garden against the Milwaukee Bucks that the Knicks lost.

The woman, who lived in the same building, made her allegation on Thursday and police investigators are considering her credible, a high-ranking source within the department told the Post.

Porzingis' lawyer, Roland G. Riopelle, denied the allegation against the 23-year-old Saturday, while the National Basketball Players Association also publicly defended Porzingis in a statement released Sunday. However, she also reportedly admitted to police that she discussed a $68,000 payment in "hush money" with Porzingis, that she planned to use to pay her brother's college tuition. At some point past year, I was retained because the complaining witness was harassing Mr. Porzingis and demanding money. "Please refer any questions to the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the National Basketball Association".

An NBA spokesman said the league is aware of the situation. We made a formal referral to federal law enforcement on December 20th, 2018, based on the accuser's extortionate demands.

Porzingis' reps said they could not comment about the accusation because they have not seen the police report, according to the Post.

She also accuses Porzingis of repeatedly punching her in the face while the alleged rape occurred. But he's not expected to play with the team till next season while he recovers from the injury.
