She also has insisted that Jewish people have a nefarious amount of sway over Congress through the use of money in politics, and has added that Jewish U.S. legislators have a misplaced allegiance to Israel.

"In this administration + all others, we should actively check antisemitism, anti-blackness, homophobia, racism, and all other forms of bigotry", tweeted Ocasio-Cortez.

Their effort is backed by the Anti-Defamation League, whose chief executive, Jonathan Greenblatt, called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to bring such a resolution to the House floor.

This is the second time in a month that Gottheimer and other House Democrats have criticized Omar.

The 29-year-old NY congresswoman added on Twitter, criticizing Trump: 'Unlike this President, Rep. @IlhanMN demonstrated a capacity to acknowledge pain & apologize, use the opportunity to learn abt history of antisemitism, +grow from it while clarifying her stance'.

Omar has faced a backlash for controversial tweets dating back to 2012, when she claimed that Israel had "hypnotized the world".

President Donald Trump weighed in on the controversy a day ahead of the vote, calling it a "dark day" for Israel.

Omar apologized for the posts - which Democratic leaders had said fed into an anti-Semitic trope and condemned as "deeply offensive" - and no further action was taken against her. "And I believe that Ilhan, in her statement a few weeks ago, has demonstrated a willingness to listen+work with impacted communities".

The declaration, supported by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, comes after Omar made new remarks about Israel that critics decried as anti-Semitic.

Congresswoman Omar's detractors include fellow Democratic Congressman Juan Vargas, who said on Twitter that "questioning support for the US-Israel relationship is unacceptable".

The Democrat-majority House is expected to vote Wednesday on a resolution condemning anti-Semitism.

"Accusing Jews of having allegiance to a foreign government has always been a vile anti-Semitic slur that has been used to harass, marginalize, and persecute the Jewish people for centuries", wrote Greenblatt.

"Her comments were outrageous and deeply hurtful, and I ask that she retract them, apologize, and commit to making her case on policy issues without resorting to attacks that have no place in the Foreign Affairs Committee or the House of Representatives", Engel continued.

The latest controversy comes as Omar was the subject of an Islamophobic attack in West Virginia's state house where a poster on display for a Republican Party event linked the congresswoman to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Omar and her family came to the U.S. as refugees from Somalia, while Tlaib is a first generation Palestinian-American with family members in the West Bank.

Omar has taken heavy fire for her remarks over the last week, which ultimately culminated in Monday night's resolution. "Worse, Rep. Omar's comments leveled that charge by invoking a vile anti-Semitic slur". I would hope the same thing would happen to her, but I'm not going to sit silent as long as there are people who are yelling out anti-Semitic tropes or anti-anything tropes, by the way.

Though Democrats have made it clear that Omar's committee assignments are safe for now, prominent leaders have publicly rebuked the freshman congresswoman for a series of anti-Semitic attacks.
