Measles Exposure Reported in Hillsdale — HEALTH ALERT

A few countries saw declines in the number of confirmed cases of measles.

The city Health Department on Thursday again called on parents to vaccinate their children against measles, as an outbreak in Brooklyn, mostly affecting the Orthodox Jewish community, grew to 121 cases since October.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), more than 70 patients, mostly children, have died from the measles virus.

Speaking on a recent panel at the Cave Hill Wesleyan Man Talk Discussion, the Director of PAREDOS, Ms. Sheila Stuart, is quoted as saying: "The Ministry of Health sent four inspectors to check those green cards for immunization purposes because we have a measles outbreak in Barbados".

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report more than 150 cases of measles so far this year.

Although measles was officially eliminated in the U.S.in 2000, and the rate of measles vaccination coverage is fairly high nation-wide, "there are pockets of people who are vaccine hesitant who delay or even refuse to vaccinate themselves and their children", which can cause outbreaks, Messonnier said. Nine of 10 unvaccinated people who come into contact with someone with measles will catch it. Fauci called it "one of the most contagious viruses known to man".

"School and daycare exclusions have been very effective at motivating parents to agree to get their children vaccinated with MMR", Jill Montag, a spokesperson for the New York State Department of Health, told Contagion®.

While most of the countries that experienced large spikes in cases are beset by unrest or conflict, France saw its caseload jump by 2,269.

Even though it has been declared eliminated in America, "measles continues to circulate globally, which means unvaccinated USA travelers can be exposed to measles and bring it back home with them", Messonnier said at the hearing. This can cause seizures, deafness, and permanent brain damage and disability, says Dr. Murphy.

Guthrie also asked Fauci whether people could "self-medicate" with vitamin A to prevent measles. Adults who had their vaccination as a kid may also consider getting another dose. "The most important variable in this equation is the number of unimmunized children". But since then, over the years anywhere from 50 to 600 cases have been reported annually.

This case is unrelated to the current outbreak that has affected 73 people in OR and Washington. "And try not to contaminate people on the way to the doctors or the hospital-wear a mask try to avoid public places".

The federal government's Vaccines for Children (VFC) program is a "critical component" of the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases, Messonnier said.

Flawed studies linking vaccines and autism have been debunked repeatedly. Measles is preventable with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. "They are best protected by vaccinating those around them who can be".

The measles vaccine became available in 1963, but one of the main versions used at the time was an inactivated, killed version of the virus.
