Fat rat rescued after getting its bum wedged in a manhole cover

A fat rat which got stuck in a manhole cover has been saved by firefighters in Germany.

Photos of the rat showed its head and rotund torso poking out of the hole, with its bottom half obscured by the sewer cover. That's when one of them managed to pop the chubby rat free and release it back into the sewer.

"Even animals that are hated by people deserve respect", he said.

The woman, known only as Juliana, said: "When my husband came home, he thought that the rat was just sitting there at first".

An animal rescuer with the "Berufstierrettung Rhein Neckar" made an unsuccessful attempt to free the distressed rodent, but ended up calling for backup from the local volunteer fire department in Auerbach, located some 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Mannheim.

Video shared on social media by the animal rescue team show nearly a dozen firefighters joining the professional in helping get the rotund rodent free. Firefighters wedged open the cover, while animal rescuer Michael Sehr worked to free the rodent, with no luck.

Sehr said that the rat, which normally can weigh up to 650 grams (22 ozs), was one of the heavier ones he had ever encountered. It added that the rat was unharmed.

After the successful rescue, two young girls presented the animal rescue team with a gift to say thank you - a drawing of a rat surrounded by love hearts, with the word "danke!" written on it.

But, in a awful world getting worse, sometimes it's nice to take a little time out of your day, and see aspects of your own personality reflected in a grain-fattened rat who dared to dream of freedom and fell painfully short.
