Trump's State of the Union address

President Donald Trump on Tuesday was set to deliver a State of the Union speech challenging Democrats to approve funding for his long-sought border wall but stopping short of declaring a national emergency over it, at least for now.

But even as his advisers touted bipartisanship, reality kept breaking through in the hours before Trump's speech.

According to a Gallup poll released yesterday, Americans are broadly opposed to the wall, with 60 percent against it and 40 percent in favor.

The deadline for a new spending bill to keep the government open is February 15. That deal did not include money for the wall.

She is expected to attack President Trump by claiming the government shutdown was "engineered by the President of the United States, one that defied every tenant of fairness and abandoned not just our people but our values".

The source said Trump would discuss troop drawdowns in Syria and Afghanistan and that about half the speech would be devoted to foreign policy. They pulled Joshua out of school for home schooling at one point but made a decision to enroll him in middle school with the hope that the bullying would decrease.

Trump continued to push his wall in a tweet earlier on Tuesday, vowing to "build a Human Wall if necessary".

Over and over, Trump has linked his calls for the wall to crime, drugs, and human trafficking, repeating weird and baseless stories about women dragged into the USA while bound with duct tape.

Other issues in tonight's State of the Union: A second summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, trade with China and America's robust economy.

Trump's speech also will offer an olive branch to opponents as he looks toward the 2020 election, targeting areas he sees for potential bipartisan agreement, such as infrastructure improvements, lowering prescription drug costs and healthcare.

What's more likely is that Trump will use the synagogue shooting to bring up anti-Semitism or hate crimes generally, a topic he's been criticized for not coming out forcefully enough against.

Mrs Trump is expected to leave the White House 40 minutes before the President. Abrams lost a close, highly-contested race to Republican Brian Kemp during the November 2018 midterms.

Conway - and the rest of the politically interested world - will be watching the speaker throughout what aides say will be a slightly shorter address than the previous two Trump has delivered in the House chamber. "However, we have seen this administration use this tool in a way that was never intended".

Representative Pramila Jayapal said on Monday she would invite climate scientist Lisa Graumlich, dean of the College of the Environment at the University of Washington, to underscore the climate change issue.

There's good reason to believe the speech, like so many others apparently penned by his main speechwriter Stephen Miller, will be a series of empty clichés paired with lurid and possibly pornographic descriptions of violence committed by the dark-skinned immigrants who haunt Trump's imagination.

Trump's guests for the speech include Anna Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old woman whose life sentence for drug offences was commuted by the president, and Joshua Trump, a sixth-grade student from Wilmington, Delaware, who was allegedly bullied because of his last name.

The Democratic response to Trump will be delivered by Stacey Abrams, who excited interest from activists across the country in the fall when she was almost elected the U.S.'s first African-American woman state governor by voters in once-segregated Georgia.
