Thank U, Next: Maroon 5′s Super Bowl halftime show was basic

Maroon 5 will take the stage at halftime of Sunday night's contest at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and they will be joined by Big Boi and Travis Scott.

Adam Levine and friends kicked off the performance as fireworks burst from a stage designed like the letter "M", which should have stood for "magic", because they needed some.

A small snippet of SpongeBob Squarepants' Sweet Victory introduction was played in tribute to cartoon creator Stephen Hillenburg, who recently died.

He performed in a flaming fake crater before Big Boi arrived in a classic auto and he sang his verse from "I Like The Way You Move" by Outkast.

Not unlike the Academy's inability to secure a viable host for the Oscars, the NFL's quest to nail down a halftime performer proved a surprisingly controversial affair.

Cardi B and Rihanna had been asked to perform at halftime this year, but both turned the offer down to show support for former National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick. I think we're doing the same thing.

It was then back to Maroon 5 for Girls Like You and She Will Be Loved, before Big Boi rode in on a Cadillac convertible, minus his Outkast co-star Andre 3000, for The Way You Move.

New Yorker - "Maroon 5's Adam Levine can be magnetic onstage, but his songs sound benign and computer-generated, smoothed to the point of incomprehensibility".

Last year's Super Bowl halftime show featured Justin Timberlake, and Lady Gaga performed the year before. "[.] I spoke to many people, most importantly though, I silenced all the noise and listened to myself, and made my decision about how I felt".

Maroon 5's lead vocalist, Adam Levine, removed his shirt, which led viewers to remember the reaction to Janet Jackson and "Nipplegate" 15 years ago. This was the first time since Super Bowl 50 in 2016 that multiple artists performed during the halftime show. But the bar should be higher than the staid, run-of-the-mill jaunt we got from Maroon 5. He went on stage singing one of the fan-favorite songs that we all love, "The Way You Move".
