However, the Mate X merely is 11 millimeters thick when folded, a lot thinner than Samsung's 17 millimeter Galaxy Fold. Samsung will provide a model with 4G and a model with 5G.

Unlike critical network infrastructure, 5G smartphones are unlikely to face any scrutiny over the origin of the chips enabling their 5G functionality.

LG Uplus has deployed more than 10,000 5G sites across Korea using Huawei technology, providing average mobile speeds of 900Mbps in Seoul.

Forrester Research vice-president Thomas Husson said it will take another five to seven years before 5G phones are adopted by the masses in most countries.

The US has been urging its allies to ban Huawei's 5G equipment because of fears that the equipment could be used by the Chinese government for espionage. However, at first glance, the task is more complicated for the Chinese firm.
