R. Kelly charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual abuse in Chicago

Rumors about R. Kelly and underage girls have swirled since the 1990s, and today the singer is facing a 10-count indictment of aggravated criminal sexual assault involving minors in IL.

The charges filed Friday list four victims, including at least three between the ages of 13 and 17.

The Class 2 felony charge carries a three- to seven-year sentence in the state of IL.

"Illinois has consecutive sentencing for multiple child sex victims, so you take very tough potential sentencing for even one charge and then you add multiple victims", which adds up to a possible sentence of 15-to-20-plus years, Salerno says, noting that "sentencing ranges with all the counts, and victims' [accounts] could theoretically vary a great deal".

The singer, whose legal name is Robert Kelly, is one of the top-selling recording artists of all time.

R Kelly's Chicago-based attorney Steve Greenberg told the Associated Press allegations and claims presented in the Lifetime docuseries Surviving R. Kelly were completely false. The charges handed up in an indictment from a grand jury span from 1998 to 2010, Foxx said.

According to Avenatti, the tape shows Kelly assaulting the teen at his "residence" sometime in the late '90s - "approximately 1999". The R&B legend has been the subject of a criminal investigation into his years of alleged sexual abuse against underage girls.

While unconfirmed, the charges likely stem from new evidence attorney Michael Avenatti gave to Kim Foxx, Chicago's Cook County state attorney. But while there is a strong hope that the justice system will prevail, Kelly's reported victims, his children and all who have experienced sexual trauma will also have to relieve their pain and trauma all over again.

Gerald Griggs, an Atlanta lawyer who represents the parents of a woman they believe is being held against her will in his "sex cult", has spoke out on the news.

Washington said she ran and hid in the bathroom while Kelly and her friend allegedly engaged in sexual intercourse.

Last week, Jim DeRogatis reported for the New Yorker that IL prosecutors were preparing to indict Kelly after obtaining a newly discovered videotape that appears to show the singer having sex with an apparently underage girl.

CNN has seen the VHS tape that appears to show Kelly having sex with a girl who refers to her body parts as 14 years old.

Now less than two months later, the controversial R&B star was charged in Cook County, Illinois, on Friday. One of the women provided physical evidence to support her allegations against R. Kelly. In 2017, DeRogatis wrote a story for BuzzFeed about the allegations Kelly was holding women against their will in Georgia.
