"Photos of people of interest who were in area of the alleged assault & battery of Empire cast member", Guglielmi tweeted on Wednesday evening alongside the photos of the figures, both wearing dark clothing, walking side-by-side. Smollett reportedly had a fractured rib as well. According to Guglielmi, Smollett later went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital after police advised him to do so.

On Thursday, the Smollett family condemned the "violent and unprovoked attack", calling it "a racial and homophobic hate crime" in their first official statement since the incident. It was reported Thursday that police had surveillance footage of Smollett returning to his apartment with a rope tied around his neck.

President Donald Trump says he's seen the reports about the racially-charged attack in Chicago on "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett and described what happened as "horrible".

Investigators have video of Smollett entering the hotel after the alleged attack with what appears to be a noose around his neck, Guglielmi said.

Police told Elgas that detectives used time codes from two different cameras to piece together the movements of Smollett and the two "people of interest".

Guglielmi said because of the financial relationship between the two men, they are trying to verify the call took place and have requested phone records or the physical phones used for the call. Some of the outrage stemmed from Smollett's account to detectives that his attackers yelled that he was in "MAGA country", an apparent reference to the Trump campaign's "Make America Great Again" slogan.

"That I can tell you is terrible", Trump told reporters.

The FBI is investigating a threatening letter targeting Smollett that was sent last week to the Fox studio in Chicago where Empire is filmed, Guglielmi said.

In addition to his acting career, Smollett has a music career and is a noted activist, particularly on LBGTQ issues.

Actor Jussie Smollett attends The Trevor Project's 2018 TrevorLIVE gala at The Beverly Hilton, in Los Angeles, on December 02, 2018. Jamal is the gay son to Terrence Howard's character Lucious Lyon and Taraji P. Henson's character Cookie Lyon.

"While video [footage] does not capture an encounter, detectives are taking this development seriously and wish to question individuals as more cameras are being reviewed", he added. They also want to make clear that he has been nothing but cooperative with police. We are thankful to our village for your enormous support during this trying time.
