Albert Finney Dead at 82

Five-time Oscar nominee Albert Finney has died after a brief illness. "The family request privacy at this sad time", reads a statement.

Albert was a star of stage and screen, but was perhaps best known for his titular role in four-time Oscar-winning film Tom Jones.

Finney's other memorable roles included Daddy Warbucks in Annie (1982) and Winston Churchill in The Gathering Storm (2002) - for which he won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA.

"He's the reason I am an actor", Finney said in 2012. After a series of television roles, Finney made his debut on the big screen in the 1960 drama film "The Entertainer", directed by Tony Richardson. Still, Finney declined to attend the Academy Awards ceremony - possibly damaging his chances at future wins by snubbing Hollywood's elite.

Finney's death has prompted a flood of tributes to the British star, one of the leading actors of the post-war era.

Veteran British actor Albert Finney holds up his BAFTA award at the British Academy Film Awards in London February 25, 2001.

A tweet on the official James Bond account quoted them as saying: "We are heartbroken at the loss of Albert Finney".

Erin Brockovich is another of Finney's performances that shows his ability and range as an actor, changing the way many viewed masculinity and more.

Then came Tom Jones, in which he played the title role, which was also a sizable hit in the United Sates. Jesus, it suddenly seemed important what I did next, so I said to hell with it.

In "Skyfall", Finney played the Bond family's gamekeeper Kincade.

Yesterday the 82-year-old died after a short illness, leaving behind an incredible acting career.

"This is a man from very humble origins who became rich when he was very young", said Quentin Falk, author of an unauthorized biography of Finney.

Finney married Penelope Delmage in 2006 and is survived by her and a son, Simon Finney.

"Sam Mendes has done a really great job, and I think Daniel Craig, the third time he's played the part, really fits the jacket snugly and has a nice edge to him", the actor told the MEN.
