Netflix's Bird Box Reaches 45 Million Views in First Week

"Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched "Bird Box" - best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!" the streaming service's official Twitter posted on Friday, alongside a GIF of the flick's leading lady taking off her blindfold and saying, "Oh my god". Netflix says there's a pretty good chance that you have. Wisely debuted in the thick of the holiday season, Bird Box wracked up more than 45 million views within a week, according to Netflix, and if you're one of the folks who settled in for a scare over the break, then you're probably eager to dig into the film, spoilers and all!

Based on the 2014 novel by Josh Malerman and adapted by screenwriter Eric Heisserer (Oscar-winning alien contact movie Arrival), Netflix had Susanne Bier of award-winning film In a Better World and TV hit The Night Manager as the feature's director. I haven't seen the Sandra Bullock-led movie.

If you've seen it, you're aware of the multitudes that brief statement contains.

Netflix NFLX, +4.62% has avoided releasing ratings data for its shows that would reveal how many people watch them, but has from time to time claimed record viewership, typically without providing raw or historical numbers to back up their claims.

So 45 million accounts have not seen the entirety of Bird Box - they've seen most of it, and it's a safe bet that many of them are not USA -based accounts.

Also, Netflix has no independent verifier for checking the numbers, all of which are verified by none other than Netflix itself. Netflix told them that the 45 million accounts in question watched at least 70% of Bird Box's running time (including the credits).

For the entertainment industry however, it's a bigger issue.

As Business Insider pointed out, it doesn't necessarily mean all those accounts wound up finishing Bird Box.

If you haven't seen Bird Box for yourself yet, you can give the synopsis and trailer a look-see below.
