By Own Correspondent| At least 20 children inside a Beijing primary school have been wounded following an attack by a male labourer, Chinese authorities have said.

Three children suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the Xicheng district government said on its social media account.

The attack took place in a district called Xicheng in the Beijing and the knife-wielding attacker was arrested by the police, state-run People's Daily said in a Twitter post.

The man is a maintenance worker at the school and his contract is due to expire at the end of January, police said.

However, all the children are receiving hospital treatment and an investigation has been launched.

However, Jia was upset about the arrangement and used his hammer to attack students during class, ' the statement read.

The school, founded in 1908, has 2,537 students and 199 teaching personnel, according to its website. His grandson is a second-grader at the school.

Jia Liquan, 49, whose work with the school ended this month leaving him jobless, is understood to have attacked the children in the playground during break time.

Many schools in China have increased security in recent years following violence against students and family members.

In April, a stabbing outside a middle school in the northwestern province of Shaanxi saw seven students killed and 12 others injured.

In November 2018, five people were killed when a auto was driven into a crowd of children outside a kindergarten in the northeast of the country.
