The desperate pair called for help just before midnight on Friday, but cops were unable to retrieve the ring, and the unnamed couple, believed to be tourists, gave up and left. They managed to pull the ring out of a utility grate on Saturday morning.

New York City police released a video showing the couple, which can be seen above, to Twitter.

The department has taken to social media in an effort to enlist the public's help in locating the couple.

The police also posted a photo of the ring that had been recovered - and cleaned - by their officers.

The good news is that officers from the New York Police Department clearly have a romantic side and, more importantly, access to the grate, so could get it out quite easily.

According to a Tweet from NYPD, the woman said yes, but the man was reportedly "so excited" that it caused him to drop the ring.

The New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square attract over a million visitors from the US and around the world every year.
