Police said the fire was "under control", as confirmed in a tweet, and the 144th precinct asked citizens to avoid 20th Avenue and 31st Street.

"Earlier this evening, a major electrical failure occurred at a Con Ed substation in Queens".

"Something insane is happening in the sky above Manhattan right now, " New York University sociologist Eric Klineberg wrote on Twitter under a video of the flashing sky. Fortunately, it appears no one was injured in the incident, and I commend first responders for their swift response. The utility's outage map showed only about 50 power outages as of 9:50 p.m. Thursday, but that number was growing.

Reports soon came in that La Guardia had lost power and that the airport had closed as a result. And the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said in a tweet that No. 7 train had been disrupted by the power failures.

Authorities in NY on Thursday said they were looking into a "transformer incident" following reports of an explosion. "We will take all necessary action to ensure the safety and security of the community".

LaGuardia Airport had to run on backup generators, causing a ground stop and delaying flights from taking off for at least an hour, but was running again around 11 p.m. Planes were landing at the airport but departing flights were temporarily held.

People flocked to social media to find out what happened and to share their views of the plumes of smoke pouring from the transformer.

"What's happening in NY!?"

"Electricity went out, then the explosion, my building humming and shaking, sky was lit up blue, green, and white", one resident said on Twitter.

Residents left their homes as the black sky turned neon blue, with several telling the Guardian they thought they were witnessing an alien invasion.
