The Republic had initially been drawn in Group C alongside the Netherlands and Germany but were handed a reprieve as the groups already contained two of the 12 host nations for Euro 2020.

The Republic of Ireland meanwhile, have ended up in Group D with Switzerland, Denmark, Georgia and Gibraltar.


The tournament will open in Rome on June 12 before ending in London at Wembley Stadium, which will stage both semifinals and the final on July 12.

Group F: Spain, Sweden, Norway, Romania, Faroe Islands, Malta.

Group G: Poland, Austria, Israel, Slovenia, Macedonia, Latvia.

World champions France will begin their hunt to claim a second major worldwide tournament in succession by facing Iceland, Turkey, Albania, Moldova and Andorra.

Our Belgian trio of Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen could face young winger Anthony Georgiou when the Red Devils meet Cyprus in Group I. Russia, Scotland, Kazakhstan and San Marino are also in their pool.

Italy, which failed to qualify for the World Cup, is in Group J with Bosnia-Herzegovina, Finland, Greece, Armenia and Liechtenstein.

Regarding Ireland once again facing Denmark, McCarthy said that is about time that Ireland starting taking point from Christian Eriksen and Co.

It is separate from the Nations League Final Four in June 2019.
