Lewis propelled himself to the title bout with a thunderous victory over Alexander Volkov at UFC 229.

Cormier landed four takedowns and was rarely troubled as he made the first defence of the 265-pound title he won off Stipe Miocic earlier in the year.

The "DC" initials that flashed on the Madison Square Garden marquee have a deeper meaning for Daniel Cormier.

Cormier defended his title with a clinical win over Lewis.

Cormier's record moves to 22-1-0, plus one no-contest.

Once the fight was on the ground, Cormier stayed in complete control by keeping Lewis down and then just hammering away with punches.

For former middleweight king Weidman, 34, it's a further step back after he was looking to build on his win last time out against Gastelum, but now slips to 14-4 overall.

Brock Lesnar took a step back from WWE after he dropped the Universal Title at SummerSlam to focus on MMA training, but The Beast became the Universal Champion once again when he defeated Braun Strowman at Crown Jewel on Friday. "I know y'all guys don't expect me to come in here and get no submissions or nothing technical, you're going to get what you've been seeing, it's going to be all heart".

"I think a lot of people have to understand that I've been doing this for nine years and I've fought at a championship level for eight of them", he said.

We'll see if Cormier does, in fact, retire in March - but it does seem as if everyone around him genuinely hopes he will. Coaches, managers, teammates - even UFC president Dana White, who knows how valuable Cormier is as an active fighter - can't deny it makes sense. Now with his suspension served, the path is clear for Lesnar to return.

Lewis fought on that same UFC 229 card as McGregor and Nurmagomedov, and was getting thoroughly beaten by Alexander Volkov for nearly the entire three rounds that they fought before he landed a flawless punch and finished the fight with follow-up strikes in the fight's final 10 seconds. But, as happened in the first round, Cormier grabbed a single leg and swept Lewis to his back.
