That confirmation came at its developer conference in San Francisco, where we also got a look at Samsung's new One UI for both its regular smartphones and the upcoming foldable device.

Mr Justin Denison, a senior vice-president of mobile product marketing, on Wednesday showed a prototype with a screen that he said measured 18.5cm diagonally.

Foldable phones promise the screen of a small tablet in a pocket-sized device.

Little-known Chinese technology company Royole Corp first beat South Korean giant Samsung in launching the world's first foldable smartphone - and now early reviews suggest it actually works.

The announcement means other companies can start building the voice assistant system into their own machines and devices as well. But since it has become the No. 1 maker and distributor of smartphones (Huawei is now No. 2, with Apple No. 3), its reputation as being strictly a leading IT hardware vendor has changed significantly.

Now it's just over a couple of months later and we already have Samsung's second Android Go smartphone. And it has tough and entrenched competition in Siri, Google, Cortana, Alexa in other devices. Now, it is evolving into a scalable, open AI platform to support many devices, including fridge and TVs.

Of course, as with any Samsung patent (or patents in general), this doesn't mean that we will actually see this product commercially available.

"But it's smart to open it up to developers early to do different types of experiences". These enhanced tools include SmartThings Cloud Connector, SmartThings Device Kit and SmartThings Hub Connector. For example, users now can have a compact smartphone that unfolds to reveal a larger immersive display for multitasking and viewing content.

As shown in the image above, the device is a wallet-like gadget that folds in half.

The device does not fold flat and was quite hard to hold, Bell said, adding that the plastic display lifted a little over the hinges and made a "crunching sound" while folding.
