25 people, including children killed as bus plunges into canal in Karnataka

The Press Trust of India news agency reported that numerous dead were children who were returning from school.

A boy who jumped from the vehicle is believed to be the only survivor and is said to be 'in a state of shock'.

Among the confirmed dead were 13 women and 10 children.

Twenty-nine passengers, including at least seven schoolchildren heading home after class, died on Saturday when the bus they were travelling in plunged into a canal in Karnataka's Mandya district after the driver apparently lost control while speeding round a bend. The incident took place in Mandya which is 105km from Bengaluru.

Manjunath, a resident, said that they alerted the local authorities who stopped the water into the canal. Many passengers could not escape from the bus as it fell to its side, trapping the doors on the floor of the canal. I believe the driver was not driving properly, I will find out.

Visuals from the site of the accident showed locals using ropes to try and pull the bus out of the water body.

"I'm sorry to hear about the awful bus accident in Mandya district of Karnataka in which over 20 people are feared dead & many others injured".

Parameshwara said a rescue operation was under way, with police rushing divers to the spot. "I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased & pray for the speedy recovery of the injured". Also, he has directed to postpone the state film award ceremony scheduled this evening.
