Saudi’s crown prince: reformism and authoritarianism

The two regional heavyweights and U.S. allies have engaged in a delicate balancing of shared interests and opposing positions, sometimes teaming up to oppose President Bashar Assad in the Syrian conflict, for example, while sparring over Saudi Arabia's campaign to isolate Qatar and its regional fight against political Islam.

"If Khashoggi was indeed murdered inside a diplomatic facility, it is an act of terror that echoes Russian and Chinese tactics of extraterritorial, extrajudicial attacks on dissidents, meant to intimidate any who would speak out against the Saudi government, no matter where they may be, and giving the lie to official narratives of 'reform" in Saudi Arabia, ' said Summer Lopez, PEN America's senior director of free expression programs.

Trump issued the remarks during a rally in MS last week.

In an interview Friday with Bloomberg reporters, the Saudi crown prince said he was "very keen to know what happened" to Khashoggi. "The consulate officials can not save themselves by simply saying "he has left", Erdogan told a news conference in Budapest, where he is on an official visit. He said it would have been unfair to go ahead with the listing only to surprise investors soon after with a big deal in chemicals.

Mystery surrounds the fate of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who has been missing since entering the kingdom's Istanbul consulate on October 2.

The official also vehemently denounced "these unfounded accusations" regarding the alleged killing of the Saudi Journo in the consulate.

In his columns, Khashoggi has been critical of some policies of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Riyadh's intervention in the war in Yemen.

"I believe the unemployment rate will start to decline from 2019 until we reach 7.0 percent in 2030 as targeted", he said.

Saudi Arabia has insisted that Khashoggi left the consulate before his disappearance.

Saudi Arabia invited a group of journalists into the Istanbul mission on Saturday, in an effort to show that Khashoggi was not on the premises.

Making another significant investment in SoftBank's next Vision Fund would help the PIF boost its assets, which have already risen to more than US$300 billion, Prince Mohammed said.

"I believe late 2020, early 2021", he said, referring to the timing of the IPO. He has also asked the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to hand over video footage, according to Politico.

Khashoggi's fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, a Turkish national, said that she waited outside the embassy for four hours on Tuesday before calling police. "It has been conveyed to him that we expect full coordination in the investigation process", the official said.

Riyadh said the 59-year-old journalist, a contributor to the Washington Post, had left the Saudi consulate shortly after arriving.

The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in Istanbul initiated an investigation on the day of the incident while the consulate also said on Twitter that it was working in coordination with Turkish authorities.

One Turkish official told The Associated Press earlier Saturday night: "The initial assessment of the Turkish police is that Mr. Khashoggi has been killed at the consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul".
