Prithvi Shaw slams hundred on Test debut

Prithvi Shaw created history on Thursday by becoming the youngest Indian cricketer to score a century on debut as they slammed 134 off 154 balls on Day 1 of the first Test match against West Indies in Rajkot.

Shaw is the fourth-youngest global batsman to score a century on debut.

Shaw, 18, also became India's second-youngest century maker after Sachin Tendulkar as he blasted his way to a century in 99 deliveries in Rajkot.

In the last one year, Shaw has been sensational and has forced his way into the Indian Test team by performing exceptionally well in the domestic circuit and for India A. The Mumbai batsman has a first class average of 56.72 at a strike rate of 76.69.

Holder injured his ankle during the preparatory camp in Dubai, and in his absence, opener Kraigg Brathwaite was handed over the captaincy for the second time in Tests.

Shaw, who was 75 not out at lunch, reached the three figures in the afternoon session with a typical punch to the cover, the same way he got his first runs in worldwide cricket.

Any hopes West Indies had of finding further immediate breakthroughs were then dashed as Shaw and Pujara combined in a 206-run second wicket stand to consolidate the innings. Unfortunately, Shaw fell at the stroke of tea, in what was a soft dismissal as he chipped one straight into the hands of leggie Devendra Bishoo. Both Keemo Paul and debutant Sherman Lewis kept on bowling outside off making Shaw's life slightly easier. After Rahul's dismissal, Shaw and Pujara gave the innings a move on and did not look in any sort of trouble. Prithvi also got the opportunity to bat with his skipper Virat Kohli in his very first match.

Kohli, who is the world's number one Test batsman, got to his half-century against Bishoo and was getting more risky with each passing ball. Virat has hit 13 Test hundreds since 2016.
