Guwahati ODI: West Indies on course for a fighting total

India skipper Virat Kohli and deputy Rohit Sharma sent the West Indies bowlers on a leather hunt in Guwahati on Sunday. "We came up against two quality, world-class players in Rohit and Kohli".

Earlier, put into bat, West Indies scored 322 runs in the stipulated 50 overs, losing eight wickets.

The century helped Kohli become the fastest batsman to 60 global tons and took him within touching distance of the 10000-run mark in ODIs as well.

The next ODI will be played at Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

Kohli has played 204 innings so far and has a lot of time in hand to get to the milestone and add another feather in his already illustrious cap.

In reply, India lost opener Shikhar Dhawan in just the second over of the innings after he was bowled by debutant fast bowler Oshane Thomas.

Shimron Hetmyer (L) of West Indies celebrates with teammate Jason Holder after scoring his third ODI hundred. We probably conceded too many boundaries, but we went looking for wickets since that's the only way to win the game.

This sort of superiority together, with regular contributions from Dhawan, has been the theme of India's recent ODI history, to the extent that it is comparable on the surface to Ricky Ponting's Australian team that demolished sides with a formidable top three during the period of their consecutive World Cup triumphs. Kohli has taken only 386 innings to 60 centuries taking 40 innings fewer than Tendulkar. No team can complain when they chase 323 with almost eight overs to spare and eight wickets in hand.

Powell bossed a second-wicket stand of 56 with Shai Hope (32) after the exit of Chandrapaul Hemraj (9), but Windies slipped to 114-4 once they were removed, with their dismissals sandwiching Marlon Samuels' duck. But the Indian batsman played a pull/pick shot on one leg.
