Dortmund Teenager Sancho Gets England Squad Call

Jadon Sancho, Mason Mount and James Maddison have received their first England call-ups for this month's Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain.

Since moving to Borussia Dortmund from Manchester City, Jadon Sancho has been impressive as the youngster bagged one goal and eight assists for the Bundesliga giants so far this season.

In fact he has created more goals than any other player in Europe's five major leagues this season (5).

Reports suggested he would be handed his first U21 call but an impressive performance and an assist against Monaco on Wednesday changed Southgate's mind.

Southgate, who ultimately saw England beaten 2-1 by Croatia in their first World Cup semi-final since 1990, said he was fortunate to have a great back-up team - his assistant Steve Holland was also awarded a new contract, and the players performing on the pitch.

His inclusion nonetheless raises eyebrows but Southgate feels his place and that of Derby County midfielder Mason Mount is well-deserved and with a number of key players absent through injury it gives both an opportunity to stake a claim.

Scotland worldwide and Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney has also been linked with a switch to England, but manager Alex McLeish said there is "nothing sinister" in his absence from the squad named this week.

Ross Barkley and Nathaniel Chalobah are also called up.

Dele Alli, Fabian Delph, Jesse Lingard and Adam Lallana all miss the two Nations League fixtures through injury.

"He's been courageous enough to go overseas and play", Southgate said.

The winger's promotion to the senior setup comes after a sparkling beginning to the new season for Dortmund that has included two Champions League starts.

"Well, he's had a long period injured at Chelsea past year, so that wasn't a reflection on the quality of the player that he hadn't been with us, but he wasn't getting any football, really", Southgate said. He had a year at [Dutch side] Vitesse Arnhem last year so he's had another year of men's football.

"To have a player starting in the Champions League is of importance to us", Southgate said. We think there are some exciting young players that we've been tracking, either through their clubs or our junior teams ...

Sancho, 18, is one of three teenagers alongside 19-year-olds Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mason Mount.

Jadon Malik Sancho was born in London, England on March 25, 2000, which makes him 18-years-old. Alex McCarthy (3 December 1989) is the oldest player at 28. The squad has a total of 51 global goals.
