Filming is set to begin next summer. Larry Kert originated the role of Tony on Broadway in 1957, and the part was played by Richard Beymer for the film.

Elgort being unveiled as the first piece of the casting puzzle in West Side Story is surely a good thing, as he actually seems like a good fit for Tony.

Cape Town - Ansel Elgort has been cast in the lead role for Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story.

It's a big get for Elgort, who was last seen in Baby Driver - especially given that Spielberg has reportedly spent the majority of 2018 thus far looking for the flawless actors to cast in his take on the classic tale, which offers up a twist on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

The script will be penned by the legendary playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner with, of course, the original Leonard Bernstein score and Stephen Sondheim's lyrics.

He previously starred in 2017's "Baby Driver" and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Up next, Elgort will topline science-fiction drama "Jonathan" for Well Go in November and "The Goldfinch", set to be released in October of 2019.

The role will require Elgort to do his own singing and dancing, calling into play his brief EDM stint as Ansolo and his more recent moodier sound on singles "Thief" and "Supernova".

Naturally, as soon as the news broke, the internet was quick to start speculating who might be cast in a remake, and now it looks as though Spielberg has finally settled on his male lead. The feature film adaptation was helmed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins on its way to 10 Academy Awards.

Despite the constant threat of gang violence as well as external antagonisms from members of law enforcement, the love shared between Tony and Maria guides both characters through the throes of adolescence.
