"We were calling out their plays as (Stafford was) getting up to the line", Lee said, via the New York Post. But Lee didn't bite-"as a defense we said, don't bite the cheese"-hung back and leaped to snag the pass high in the air. It seemed like we were in his head as a defense". On the next play Isaiah Crowell scored a 6-yard touchdown, his first as a Jet, to tie the game 7-7. The Detroit Lions scored on a touchdown on the game's first snap, but it wasn't long before the fans at Ford Field sensed trouble.

Unfortunately for Em and the Lions though, the game didn't go too well as the Sam Darnold-led Jets crushed Detroit 48-17, giving their new head coach Matt Patricia plenty of things to work on ahead of next week's game against the 49ers. "They obviously are the ones that played well tonight", Patricia said.

Monday's rout brought little reason for optimism. Not one - no pick-sixes, no fumble recoveries - none.

There were boos from the crowd later in the quarter, though. He went 27-for-46 for 286 yards and one touchdown. That might be a leg-up for Patricia on Monday, considering the Jets and Pats are division rivals.

Linebacker Darron Lee had two of New York's interceptions, including one he ran back 36 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Perhaps most distressing, the Jets said they had a read on Stafford's signals.

The referee for the game is Bill Vinovich, who is refereeing his ninth Jets game since 2004, including the 2006 playoff game at New England and the 2015 home win over Miami.

"I told somebody I was going to break that curse", Lee said.

"I'm going to be most disappointed in myself".

"He's always smooth under pressure, he doesn't get rattled, so we weren't anxious whatsoever", Lee said. "But you try to do a good job of gauging your players and how they're handling the week".

Darnold earned the right to start in Week 1 over journeyman team favorite Josh McCown because he showed good leadership qualities and a feel for defenses beyond his years. Kenny Golladay racked up 114 yards on seven receptions, and Golden Tate caught seven passes for 79 yards and a TD.

But the offense couldn't build on Diggs' early touchdown.

Detroit did a lot to try to shore up the running game this offseason, drafting Kerryon Johnson and adding LeGarrette Blount. Defensive end Ziggy Ansah left with a shoulder injury. By the top of the second quarter, he'd more than erased the deficit he'd created in the game's first 20 seconds.

They scored 31 straight in the third quarter to pull away, sending Detroit's fans for the exits and setting off a jolly green party in the Motor City.
