The public viewing of his casket, after a brief ceremony for family and dignitaries led by Gov. Doug Ducey, came on the first of five days of memorial tributes planned for McCain, who died on Saturday from brain cancer.

"He cared about the substance of my heart moreso than where I came from", he said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a man who at times fought on the opposite side of McCain on issues like campaign finance, remembered McCain as a tough political opponent.

"We'd talk about family", Biden said of his relationship with McCain. The school choir from Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix - where McCain's sons Jack and Jimmy attended - performed a rendition of "Amazing Grace" early in the memorial. "We're all Americans, and we got to get to the point where we can work together as Americans", said Grant Woods, McCain's former chief of staff.

The music chosen for the recession is Frank Sinatra's signature My Way, paying tribute to a man who became known for following his own path based on his personal principles. But it was nevertheless filled with affecting moments and demonstrations of deep respect for the statesman and Navy pilot war hero who was held by the North Vietnamese for 5½ years after being shot down over Hanoi. Wednesday would have been his 82nd birthday. As many as 15,000 members of the public waited in line for hours, as temperatures climbed above 100F, to pay their respects.
