Joaquin Phoenix’s look as the Joker revealed

The Joker is now filming in New York City and director Todd Phillips has made a decision to give us the first official look at Joaquin Phoenix in character.

Phillips is co-writing and directing the Joker film. The Joker has, of course, used many aliases over the years, but most have always involved a "J" somewhere (Jack Napier, Jack White etc.), so it's something of a departure for this incarnation to omit the letter entirely.

The story will be a character study as well as a cautionary tale of "a man disregarded by society who becomes the ultimate supervillain", according to Deadline. The photo is captioned "Arthur", seemingly confirming rumors that the character's real name is Arthur Fleck. Emma Tillinger Koskoff is producing the WB/Village Roadshow movie, which Richard Baratta is exec producing. Warner also developing a standalone Joker film that will operate within the DC Universe and star Leto.

Joaquin Phoenix is ready to dance with the devil in the pale moonlight.

We know that Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz (Atlanta, Deadpool 2) and Marc Maron (Glow) do have roles. The pic shows Phoenix looking at the camera, with a slight smile on his visage. It also boasts a modest $55 million price tag, which is significantly lower than most other tentpole flicks in the genre. So, it will be interesting to see how comic book fans react to what Todd Phillips and Phoenix are creating together.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the Daily Mail released video footage shot on the film's gritty set in Harlem, New York, in which Phoenix and an unidentified actor in clown makeup are shooting a scene.

Joker (or whatever it ends up being called) hits cinemas October 4th, 2019.
