The Queen of Soul's funeral is underway.

Wonder was planning on collaborating on a song with Franklin before her passing, and visited her on her deathbed two days before she passed. She was reported to be "gravely ill" earlier in the week, and died at her home in Detroit. The author also added that although she had her first major label recording when President Dwight Eisenhower was in the white house, she only got to perform at the inauguration of Barrack Obama.

The start of the service - meant to begin at 10 a.m. - was delayed.

Her body arrived early Friday in a 1940 Cadillac LaSalle hearse.

In the church lobby were floral arrangements from some of Franklin's best-known friends, including Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross. Granddaughter Victorie Franklin said when she was young, she didn't recognize the fame of a woman others consider music royalty.

They filed past and paid their respects at Franklin's open casket, where they saw her wearing a sparkling full-length gold dress with sequined heels - her fourth and final outfit of the week. Franklin performed at Parks's funeral.


Her coffin is to be entombed in Detroit's Woodlawn Cemetery near the remains of her father; her brother, Cecil Franklin; and her sisters, Carolyn and Erma Franklin.

Numerous floral arrangements from celebrities including Sam Moore, Mariah Carey, Barbra Streisand and the family of Otis Redding were set up in a hallwayoutside the sanctuary.

Among those spotted at the service were Isiah Thomas, Tyler Perry, Whoopi Goldberg, the Rev. Al Sharpton, T.D. Jakes, Jennifer Holliday, Omarosa Manigault Newman, Rep. Maxine Waters and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

"The queen's legacy, the queen's life - what can we leave here saying that the Queen of Soul has done, is doing or will do back that will impact us as a race to turn our race around?"

Bill Clinton, who was president from 1993 until 2001, led the tributes to "the voice of a generation, maybe the voice of a century".

But the iconic star's funeral became shrouded in controversy, after viewers of the "homecoming" service - which was broadcast around the world - claimed that Bishop Charles H Ellis inappropriately touched singer Ariana Grande, 25.

Since Franklin's August 16 death at 76, Owens said a close group she described as "Aretha's angels" have "worked tirelessly" and have been guided by a single question: "What would Aretha want?"
