First SpaceX passenger: 'I choose to go to the moon!'

SpaceX has already upended the space industry with its relatively low-priced reusable Falcon 9 rockets.

A mockup of the Crew Dragon spacecraft is displayed during a media tour of SpaceX headquarters and rocket factory in Hawthorne, California.

But in February this year, Mr Musk said SpaceX would concentrate on the BFR for future crewed missions. He said he wanted the artists "to see the moon up close, and the earth in full view, and create work to reflect their experience".

Elon Musk looked enthusiastic and excited at the event. No one has been there since an Apollo mission in 1972. If all goes according to plan, Maezawa will take a lunar voyage on the Big Falcon Rocket, or BFR: a launch system that SpaceX is developing to colonize Mars. The mission is now scheduled for 2023, so Maezawa will have some time to gather his dream team.

Mr Maezawa did not immediately say who will be on his guest list for the spaceflight, but in response to a question from a reporter he said he would consider inviting Mr Musk.

SpaceX has established its bona fides in the aerospace business by transporting supplies to the International Space Station and by completing the tricky maneuver of recovering rockets after launch so that they can be reused.

Maezawa, a prolific collector of modern art, said he planned to bring six to eight artists with him aboard the BFR, which stands for Big Falcon Rocket.

"It's not 100 percent certain that we succeed in getting this to flight [by 2023]", Musk said. This lunar mission - a flyby, not a landing - represents "an important step toward enabling access for everyday people who dream of traveling to space", SpaceX said in a tweet.

Maezawa who is also well known for collecting art (he bought a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting for $110 million in 2017), has called the trip which will take place in 2023, #DearMoon.

Earlier in the day, Musk was sued for defamation by the British driver he had accused of being a "child rapist" and pedophile via tweets and emails to media.

SpaceX has had a string of successful rocket launches, but that has been overshadowed by the struggles of Musk's Tesla electric vehicle company to deliver and his behavior.
