‘True Detective’ trailer offers taste of season 3

Mahershala Ali, who won an Oscar for "Moonlight", will play the lead role of Wayne Hays, an Arkansas State Police detective.

Above is the first look at the HBO's third season of the gritty crime series. Your guess is as good as mine as we try to decipher what is going on in this short, yet intriguing look at the series that ends with Ali saying: "I want to know the whole story". "Things I've seen. Things I know", Ali's Wayne says in the trailer. My job... there's no certainty.

Alongside Ali, season three also stars Ray Fisher, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, and Mamie Gummer. But we've had a few years to wash the bad taste from our mouths and True Detective is back with the first intriguing and very mysterious footage from season 3, which is giving off some serious season 1 vibes.

Set over three different time periods, season 3 of True Detective follows the investigation into a crime that takes place in the Ozark mountains, southeastern USA.

HBO's True Detective dropped in 2014, and received rave reviews. Saulnier left the production after two episodes due to scheduling conflicts, with veteran TV director Daniel Sackheim sharing shooting duties with show creator Nic Pizzolatto for the remainder of the season. It wasn't. Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch were all brought in and, their fault or not, they went down with the ship.

The next installment of True Detective will premiere in January 2019 on HBO.
