Racism looms large in Florida governor’s race

"The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases bankrupting the state".

Fox News host Sandra Smith, who interviewed DeSantis, later said on air that the network does "not condone this language".

I can imagine DeSantis profiting with the rest of the electorate.

DeSantis assailed Gillum in a Wednesday TV appearance that critics denounced as racist.

Florida is the country's third most populous state after California and Texas and will be a decisive vote in the next presidential election, where the USA president won by just one percentage point in 2016. Despite the momentum gained from his key primary win, Gillum faces the specter of a persistent Federal Bureau of Investigation corruption probe into Tallahassee city politics.

Andrew Gillum, the Democratic candidate for Florida governor, shared his support to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and to implement a single-payer health care system.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum wins Florida Democratic gubernatorial primary.

"I believe the congressman can be better than this", Gillum said.

However, the Republican's spokesman, Stephen Lawson, defended the remark, saying Mr DeSantis was referring to his opponent's political positions and not his race.

Gillum's victory on Tuesday was an unexpected one given he had lagged in most of the polling leading up to Tuesday's contest but outperformed the Real Clear Politics' polling average for the Democratic gubernatorial primary by a almost 3-to-1 margin.

"You can window dress it a hundred ways to Sunday as to what, trying to find a way to justify it for, but Floridians know what he's talking about", said former Florida Democratic Party Chair Allison Tant.

In a statement from DeSantis' campaign made to Fox News, the campaign dismissed these characterizations as "absurd". Overall crime was down in Tallahassee a year ago but the city saw a spike in homicides. The president also charged that Gillum has allowed "crime & many other problems to flourish in his city", adding, "This is not what Florida wants or needs!"

In favorability ratings, 45 percent of those surveyed said they have a favorable opinion of Gillum, and 27 percent an unfavorable opinion.

Trump welcomed DeSantis's victory in Florida and criticized Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, the Florida capital. DeSantis' remarks, however, prove the limits of Trumpism in a general election that will ultimately be decided by millions of voters who are not registered Republicans.

"In the governor's race, there is massive gender gap with Gillum leading among women by 21 and DeSantis leading among men by 13", Ulvert noted.

Trump had mostly stayed out of the race but he endorsed the 52-year-old McSally on Wednesday, saying she was "strong on crime" and "the border".
