Madonna Pays Tribute To Aretha Franklin At The 2018 VMAs

The expected tribute to Franklin at the first gathering of top musicians since the singer's death at age 76 last week came at the end of the nearly three hour ceremony.

Tony Award victor and star of the upcoming Steve McQueen film Widows Cynthia Erivo took to Twitter saying: "Madonna makes the life and works of Aretha Franklin (Queen of soul), about herself and her rise to fame".

And: "Madonna really got up on that stage, with a backdrop of Aretha Franklin behind her, and spent the entire segment talking about herself and how she proved everyone wrong". I left Detroit when I was 18, $35 in my pocket.

"My dream was to make it as a professional dancer, after years of struggling and being broke, I chose to go to auditions for musical theatre".

But artist and video of the year - for "Havana" - went to former Fifth Harmony singer Camila Cabello, who earlier had to endure comedian Tiffany Haddish struggling to pronounce her name before joking awkwardly: "I only speak English". I think Madge may have broken the Guinness World Record for saying "I" the most times in a tribute to somebody else.

"Celebrating Franklin's legacy, Madonna delivered a speech about her personal connection to Franklin, explaining that she sang "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" at the audition that initially launched her career. While her big break would come later, she said Franklin "led me to where I am today". "Well. Hello, sir. I would now like to present the nominees for the Video of the Year". Many, including myself, feared that Madonna was going to sing a song by the Queen, but fortunately, she spared us. "The AUDACITY", another fan noted.

View some reactions from Twitter users below, and watch Madonna's tribute above. You and @MTV should be ashamed.

Madonna's rambling tribute was both heartfelt and a cautionary tale about what happens when you reach a certain stratosphere where the obscene wealth and fame insulates you from people who might challenge your shitty ideas and ultimately protect you from your own delusions.

"You do not disrespect an ICON like that", wrote Nina Parker on Twitter.

Nerve sweat? They said, 'We will call you one day.

"I love you ty for unbelievable us with your attractive and powerful speech you're fantastic", another fan added.

The Shade Room posted Kandi's video, and as you will see for yourself in the comments, most people agree with Kandi 100%.
