Cam Newton confronted Kelvin Benjamin in a heated pregame chat

Cam Newton and Kelvin Benjamin did not sort out their disagreement on Thursday.

The Carolina Panthers are kicking off their preseason with a visit to the Buffalo Bills, a game that reunited Benjamin, the former Panthers receiver now playing in Buffalo, with his old quarterback in Newton.

"If you would've put me with any other QB, let's be real, you know what I'm saying?"

Benjamin's comments with The Athletic brought the conflict into the spotlight.

"I mean, I felt like I would've been even more successful if ..."

Benjamin was a first-round pick by the Panthers in 2014 and played in 40 career games with them, catching 184 passes for 2,424 yards and 19 touchdowns.

It wasn't clear how much love was on the table Thursday when Newton approached Benjamin on the field at New Era Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., but the quarterback appeared to proffer a handshake that was rejected. Benjamin was traded to Buffalo during the season previous year. Newton followed, trying to catch up, before seeming to give up. It just felt like I wasn't in that position.

While Benjamin clearly didn't want to talk about the situation, Newton didn't either, literally.

For those who haven't heard, Benjamin didn't hold back in his public criticism of his former teammate.
