Baby boy dies after being pulled from water near Brooklyn Bridge

"My mom, she was out here and she was kind of just looking in the water, and she calls my dad over and says, 'There's a baby in the water!'".

Tourists from Oklahoma discovered a baby lying unconscious and unresponsive near the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Monte Campbell (right), of Stillwater, Oklahoma, right, stands under the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan after jumping into New York's East River to rescue a baby floating in the water on Sunday. "Its little head was under the water, but his little legs were over", Diana Campbell said. So he handed the phone to his wife and waded into the water "to get the baby", he told the Times.

Police climbed over the safety railing to retrieve the baby, then brought him to the pedestrian walkway where they performed CPR, officials said.

Police say the child was found laying on an embankment at the water's edge.

A medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death. Campbell said that despite life-saving efforts, the infant had no pulse and was not breathing.

Diana Campbell called for her husband and sons.

Mrs Campbell said she took photos of him in the hope that they would help to find his parents.

The baby boy, thought to be about 8 months old, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Campbell family left around 6 p.m., with Monte Campbell calling the experience "very emotional".
