Gillum, the liberal mayor of state capital Tallahasee, won a surprising victory in the Democratic primary for Florida governor, and has said he hopes to motivate younger progressives and minority voters who normally sit out non-presidential elections. Republicans also came to DeSantis' defence, contending that the media and Democrats were mischaracterizing what DeSantis said. "We're going to try to compel and appeal to the higher values of the people of the state of Florida".

Sinema is the first openly bisexual person to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and the first to receive a major party nomination for the U.S. Senate. "To characterize it as anything else is absurd", Stephen Lawson, communications director for the DeSantis campaign, said in response to the backlash.

Gillum, who defeated former Rep. Gwen Graham and two other candidates, would be Florida's first black governor if elected in November. Facing establishment-backed former Rep. On Twitter earlier on Wednesday, the president slammed Gillum as a "failed" mayor, without citing examples.

In an interview with Fox News correspondent Sandra Smith, DeSantis shared his thoughts on Gillum, referring to him as an "articulate spokesman for far left views".

"That is not what Floridians want, " DeSantis declared.

And Roth thinks McSally could work with President Donald Trump. Gillum won the Democratic nomination in an upset.

"All of them gave Andrew Gillum a pass on some real vulnerabilities that I think the republicans will be working on here pretty quick", said GOP strategist Mac Stipanovich.

In 2014, Gillum was elected mayor of Tallahassee with 76 percent of the vote. And city hall itself has been under investigation by the FBI for corruption, although Gillum has said he is not a target of the investigation.

Gillum has said since the beginning he was told that he is not a target.

Republican Lea Marquez Peterson and Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick emerged victorious from heated primary races. "There will absolutely be a part of this that I can't even put words to around what it might mean for my children and other people's kids". Americans are projected to pay more money to health insurers through premiums over the next ten years than they would if they paid taxes in a Medicare-for-all system.
