Blagojevich is now almost halfway through serving his 14-year sentence after being found guilty of 18 felony charges, including wire fraud, extortion, bribery and conspiracy.

Stewart was convicted of multiple felony charges in 2004 and served five months in federal prison on charges related to a 2001 stock sale.

Mr. Trump told reporters traveling with him on Air Force One that Blagojevich's statement about selling the Senate seat was "a stupid thing to say - but 18 years?"

"He's not my party".

'I think to a certain extent Martha Stewart was harshly and unfairly treated, ' he said.

The former governor's wife, Patti Blagojevich, said the president had lifted the spirits of their family, including their two daughters. He's given us something that has been hard to come by recently... hope.

Echoing Flynn in a series of tweets, Public Citizen argued that "Trump is sending a blazing signal to his associates that they will be rewarded if they stay loyal".

A frequent complaint repeated Thursday was that Trump bypassed the normal procedures for considering clemency, a process that typically involves investigation by the government's pardon attorney and input from judges and prosecutors who participated in the cases.

President Donald Trump has pardoned Dinesh D'Souza, a conservative commentator he claims "was treated very unfairly by our government!" "What they did to him was frightful".

D'Souza was indicted in 2014 for violations of campaign finance laws.

The D'Souza pardon was Trump's fifth, and another in a pattern of using that near-absolute presidential power for moves based on political whim or convenience, with little or no legal review. Trump said on Twitter.

D'Souza pleaded guilty to attempting to donate $20,000 to a Senate campaign through straw donors.

Martha Stewart's office was not immediately available for comment for about Trump's possible pardon. Fitzgerald, named special counsel by Comey to investigate the unauthorized leak of the identity of an undercover Central Intelligence Agency agent, also won the conviction of Libby, a top aide to then-Vice President Dick Cheney, for obstruction of justice and perjury in that case in 2007.

"This was a vindictive political hit that was kind of aimed at putting me out of business, essentially making, destroying my credibility, making it impossible for me to make movies, write books".

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-Manhattan), a top member of the Judiciary Committee, tweeted that Trump wants "to send a message that silence will be rewarded" to those being contacted by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election.

Lauren Kaeseberg tells The Associated Press the sentence was too harsh.

Conservatives rallied around D'Souza, saying he had been singled out in a politically motivated prosecution by President Barack Obama's Justice Department. "Then he got fired & I got pardoned".
