Taking stock of the on-going turmoil in war-ridden Afghanistan, Putin said, "It is crucial that we fight the terrorist threat emanating from that country in unison, curb drug production and trafficking and render aid to Afghanistan in its national reconciliation, economic revival and stabilisation".

Aside from the United States, the G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Britain.

"The continuation of sanctions is clearly linked to Russia's failure to demonstrate complete implementation of its commitments in the Minsk Agreements and respect for Ukraine's sovereignty", it said.

Rouhani noted that Moscow can play an important role in preserving the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, after the U.S.

He signalled he wanted better relations with the USA, and said he welcomed Trump's call to allow Russian Federation back into the G7 group of leading industrialised nations.

Taking to the USA president's favourite social media, Twitter, Mr Conte wrote: "I agree with President Trump: Russia should return to the G8".

Trump claimed America had been forced to levy the metal tariffs as it has been exploited as the world's "piggy bank" under existing arrangements, but his counterparts were equally determined to protect "rules-based" worldwide trade.

Noting that Russian Federation and other members of the Eurasian Economic Union "also have disputes and do not unanimously sign everything at the same time", he played down the furor over Trump's undiplomatic diplomacy: "We can see that there are internal problems there".

As he travelled to Quebec City for the meeting of the Group of Seven industrialised economies, Trump mused last Friday that Russian Federation ought to be brought back to the group - for no discernible reason.

"As soon as the USA side is ready, this meeting shall take place, of course, fitting my working schedule".

"We are pro-Italian, not pro-Russia", Di Maio told a radio interviewer, while stressing that Conte would make his own decisions when representing Italy on the world stage.

The most powerful Russian and Chinese leaders in decades, Putin and Xi have forged closer ties as Trump has labeled both countries economic rivals that challenge United States interests and values.

"I believe it's necessary to stop this creative babbling and shift to concrete issues related to real cooperation", Putin told reporters in the Chinese city of Qingdao, when asked to comment on a G7 joint statement. "They should let Russia come back in because we should have Russia at the negotiating table." adding, "I think it would be an asset to have Russia back in".

The country was expelled from what was then called the G8 after it annexed Crimea.

Putin said the G7 countries "again" failed to provide any evidence that his country was behind the Skripal poisoning in the southwest of England.

"We have been a faithful player to this commitment, we've done our best, we've shown our good intentions".

In a symbol of close China-Russia ties, Xi on Friday gave China's first friendship medal to Putin.
