But all dogs are not handsome dogs (on the outside, at least).

Named after the late Hungarian actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, the dog spent five years in a puppy mill in Missouri before she was put up for auction and bought by a group called Underdog Rescue.

The English Bulldog, with her massive underbite and dangling tongue, won the World's Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma Marina Fairgrounds on Saturday.

Brainard drove 30 hours with her family from Anoka, Minnesota, to enter her dog in the competition. Here's what our winning pup's profile had to say about her life before World's Ugliest Dog stardom.

She was then purchased by Underdog Rescue.

While older and smaller dogs have traditionally been the best performers, this year's World's Ugliest Dog prize went to a three-year-old, 125-pound (57-kilos) Neapolitan Mastiff named Martha.

Martha was nearly blind when she came into Shirley's care, but has since undergone a number of operations and now has a pretty sweet life with her new owner.

Chase, a 14-year-old Chinese Crested-Harke mix from Neath in the United Kingdom, traveled further than any other contestent to compete in the World's Ugliest Dog competition.

Ms Brainard will now receive $1,500 for Zsa Zsa's win.

Her flopping, meaty tongue dangles by her collar.

Please also note: Her claws are painted pink, to match her collar.

"We are so excited for this", Brainard told CNN of the new canine superstar (she's set to fly to NYC to appear on the Today show).

Last year's victor, a delightfully floppy and seemingly half-melted Neapolitan Mastiff named Martha, didn't compete this year. It took several surgeries before she was able to see again.
