"I am living all my career with that", Nadal said after fending off another Argentine, the feisty, relentless Diego Schwartzman, in four sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday. Halep saved two match points to win that one.

Returning to Court Philippe Chatrier Thursday, Nadal quickly polished off the second set, and with it, effectively, Schwartzman's challenge. As long as Del Potro can avoid a high number of unforced errors, he has a shot to make this a lengthy, competitive match.

To suggest Nadal is in cahoots with the weatherman would be ridiculous, but he's certainly making the most of breaks in play due to the conditions. "If I play defensively and I don't take intensity, I will be lost".

"And when I was able to change that, I was able to win the game and the match". The American played in the semi-final of the US Open 14 times and another 11 times at Wimbledon while Roger has 14 semi-final runs at the Australian Open and additional 12 at Wimbledon.

"It's tough to speak now", the fifth-seeded Argentine player said. So, are you really betting against Nadal? And I have to play aggressively.

"He was playing great, and I was playing too defensive. For me it's always big emotions to win here".

Both men's matches already had been interrupted by rain once.

Earlier this year, del Potro put his relative lack of success on clay down to the fact that he "doesn't like running".

Meanwhile, Del Potro had to beat Marin Cilic and John Isner to reach this stage and he will be hoping to pull off a huge shock. In the victory, Del Potro won 79 percent of his first serve points and 54 percent of his second serve points.

"It was a very hard match, Diego is a good friend and a good player", said the 16-time Grand Slam champion. I had three surgeries on my left wrist.

"Everybody knows that I was close to quitting this sport two years ago", del Potro said later in press. Del Potro has claimed two of the last three after losing five straight from 2011-13.

The enormity of the situation clearly dawned on him after beating Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals on Thursday, as he sobbed tears of joy at the side of the court.

Top-ranked Simona Halep is up against 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza in the other semifinal match.

Halep converted her first match point when Muguruza sent a final backhand long.

After del Potro served out his victory at love to get to his first semi-final at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament since 2009, he sat in his changeover seat, chest heaving.

The Argentinian finally found the kind of tennis that had troubled the defending champion on Wednesday in a 12-minute-plus eighth game of the third set as Nadal served for a 2-1 lead with a double break.
