United had the majority of possession and twice as many shots as their London opponents but could not find a way past goalkeeper Adrian.

In a tiresome game with few quality chances, United defender Luke Shaw came closest to scoring when he had a shot turned onto the post in the first half.

They will likely finish second in the Premier League table this season but are a huge distance behind champions Man City who could finish 20 points ahead of them.

West Ham's Marko Arnautovic hit an early strike straight at David De Gea before the Austria global could only head over from six yards after Chris Smalling made a mess of clearing Aaron Cresswell's cross.

West Ham: Adrian (7), Zabaleta (6), Rice (7), Ogbonna (7), Cresswell (7), Kouyate (7), Noble (7), Joao Mario (6), Masuaku (6), Lanzini (6), Arnautovic (7).

Adrian made another save when Lingard's effort from distance was too close to him and, after Jones made an important clearance when Arnautovic was being a nuisance again, Pogba had a few attempts.

However, the Frenchman did come a lot closer with his final strike that curled just past the post from a narrow angle.Pogba's frustration then spilled over when he was lucky to escape with just a yellow card after grappling with West Ham captain Mark Noble as tempers flared in the latter stages.

With defences on top, Adrian made a string of saves to protect West Ham's clean sheet and justify his selection in goal ahead of England worldwide Joe Hart, who returned from illness but was only named on the bench. "David de Gea will be rested, it gives a chance for Sergio Romero to play, I can make changes".

- Manchester United have guaranteed second place in the Premier League, their highest position since winning the competition in 2012-13.
