Liverpool defender Joe Gomez out of World Cup

This news is the latest in a long line of injury blows for Liverpool, with Joe Gomez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joel Matip already ruled out of the Champions League final due to injuries.

The versatile defender has allegedly undergone an operation on the problem, meaning that the player will be absent from the final top-flight game with Brighton & Hove Albion and the meeting with Real Madrid in Kiev.

Gomez has only two caps for the England, but his form led some to believe he was in with a good chance of being called up to accompany Southgate to the World Cup finals, which start next month.

However, the club have stated that Gomez will be ready for the start of Liverpool's pre-season training schedule in July following a rehabilitation period.

Gomez, who has played at both centre-back and right-back this season, has made 31 appearances across all competitions.

"Been a tough few weeks trying everything possible to be available on the pitch to help the team. The focus now is to support the team in the two biggest games of the season", Gomez added.

Gareth Southgate has repeatedly utilised a three-at-the-back formation heading into the tournament in Russian Federation, and Gomez may well have been a selection, though his dreams of heading to the showpiece are over.

He was also part of the England side that won the European Under-17 Championship in May 2014.
