It's been almost a month since Manchester City won the title and everyone would have understood if they had mentally clocked off at that point.

This has happened before, both when Manchester United won the Europa League last season while only finishing sixth, and when Chelsea won the Champions League in 2011/12.

"The team needs some additions and, if they get them, I think they will compete for the Premier League title".

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes it will be quite some time before any team beats the 100 points his side reached in the final minute of their triumphant Premier League season.

"Okay, we are 25 points in front so it's hard to say he was hard (to play against) in the end - but he was because they beat us".

So just how many records did they break on their way to the title? The best players still go to Spain, and English football can live with the idea that the technical standard there is higher, but the Premier League's appeal is self-consciously based on the notion that it is the most competitive league. They've also scored the most goals ever in a Premier League season, with 106, and have recorded the most wins in a Premier League season, with 32.

Harry Kane did his best to chase Salah all the way at the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts, netting twice in Spurs' incredible win over Leicester, a game they twice trailed in.

If City maintain their remarkable consistency from this season, there is little hope of a title race next season and ominously the free-spending champions look set to add to a squad that has already cost a reported 878 million euros ($1 billion, £774 million). "Next season will be the same, like [Manchester] United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham".

It's natural that champions should not perform quite as well the following season: reversion to the mean is an iron law of sport. Last season the Clarets won just once on their travels and collected only seven points from 19 games.
