The man, who was overheard yelling about President Donald Trump, was shot multiple times and taken into custody without further incident, police said. The fire alarm has been set off, Perez believes in an attempt to lure police officers into the lobby.

Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez told news reporters Friday morning that the man who entered a lobby at the resort draped a flag over the counter fired shots upward at the ceiling and waited for police to arrive.

One officer is in good condition after suffering injuries not related to firearms.

An unidentified male suspect was shot and rushed to a nearby hospital, Miami-Dade Police Department said in a statement on Twitter.

Eric Trump, the president's son and executive vice president of the Trump organization, tweeted early Friday, "A huge thank you to the incredible men and women" of the departments, adding that "every day they keep our community safe".

According to local reports, police were called to the scene after the man, who was "yelling and shouting" about Trump, started "actively shooting" at around 1.30am.

"In my opinion, they probably saved a hell of a lot of lives today, because this could have gone a lot worse", Perez said of the police response. Though the precise phrases have been unclear, Perez stated it was an "anti-Trump sentiment" and the shooter "had an American flag that he did drape over-the-counter".

"We are very grateful to you!", he wrote.

An investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is underway, and the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, FBI are looking into it as well.

The Trump Organization bought the golf resort, formerly known as the Doral Resort and Spa, in 2012.

In June 2016, the PGA Tour announced that the prestigious World Golf Championship hosted at the Trump National Doral since 2007 would relocate to Mexico.
